Rain Clouds and Shaving Foam – Science Week 2017

Updated: 16th Nov 2017

Ms. Hickey’s 1st class enjoyed being scientists this week. We investigated rain clouds by adding coloured water to shaving foam which represented the clouds. As the clouds became heavy with water, it began to rain. We even created a heavy downpour by adding a large volume of water quickly.

Brooke was a very brave volunteer and allowed her classmates to poke holes with sharp pencils through a plastic bag full of water over her head! Luckily the pencils acted as a plug together with the waterproof material and she remained dry. When we pulled the pencils out, all the water poured out. We didn’t do this while it was over Brooke’s head!

We also investigated chromatography and watched how colours separate on filter paper when mixed with water. Our results showed that brown and black markers created the most amount of different colours.
